Description
Join the Ted Coningsby Squadron Live for our visit to the QRA station of the north, RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland! Our home station, TED HQ aka RAF Coningsby is the QRA station of the south, protecting the skies of the southern airspace. The key role for 'Lossie' is to protect the northern airspace. RAF Lossiemouth opened on the 1st May 1939 and Group Captain P.E. Maitland was the first commander along with 15 Flying Training School as the first unit flying the Airspeed Oxford and Hawker Harts. From Handley Page Hampdens of 44 and 50 Squadron, many more squadrons arrived including 9 Sqn who arrived with the Wellington but two squadrons 107 and 110 operated the Bristol Blenheim. In 1940 15 FTS moved in April and Lossiemouth transferred to 6 Group Bomber command. 20 OTU established operating the Wellington. In June 1940, Lossiemouth’s Satellite station RAF Elgin opened. This eventually proved useful to the OTU’s and maintenance units such as 46 Maintenance Unit and its aircraft. Their role was to modify a variety of aircraft and make them ready for front-line. From Hawker Hurricanes to Tiger Moths, the aircraft once serviced were stored in fields. From 1942, Lossiemouth was the base to launch attacks on the Tirpitz. Short Stirlings of 15 sqn, 149 Squadron along with 13 Halifax’s of 10 and 76 sqn carried out the first attacks in January 1942. Lancasters were also sent on this mission with 44 and 97 squadron along with Halifax’s of 10 squadron. 1943 More anti-shipping raids continued with the famous 617 Squadron and IX(B) armed with 14,000 tallboys to seek and destroy the Tirpitz. After the war in 1946 Lossiemouth became HMS Fulmar (Royal Naval Air Station Lossiemouth) as part of the Fleet Air Arm. It once again became a training base for the Fleet Air Arm. 766 NAS arrived with their Supermarine Seafires in 1946. On the 28th September 1972 the base reverted back to RAF control, becoming RAF Lossiemouth once again and it was 'D' Flight of No. 202 Squadron in the helicopter search and rescue role along with Jaguars from 226 Squadron begin operating from the Station. They were soon joined by Shackleton AEW aircraft from 8 Squadron who came from nearby Kinloss. In 1980, 12 Squadron move north from RAF Honington, where they operate the Buccaneer from RAF Lossiemouth. In 1993, 12 Squadron began operating the Tornado GR1B from RAF Lossiemouth. And with the last of the Buccaneers withdrawn in April 1994 with 208 sqn disbanding. 617 Squadron then transferred to Lossiemouth from Marham, with the Tornado GR1B. In 1999, 15(R) Squadron began operating from RAF Lossiemouth as the Tornado GR4 Operational Conversion Unit (OCU). In 2014, Lossie official became QRA(I) North, with 6 Squadron moving in June 2014, 1(F) Squadron moving in September 2014, and II(AC) Squadron moving in January 2015. But the time was coming for the Tornado to be replaced by the Typhoon. In preparation for the transition to the Typhoon,12 Squadron and617 Squadron disbanded on 1 April 2014, leaving No.15 (R) Squadron as the only remaining Tornado unit at Lossiemouth. The first Typhoon unit to arrive and operate at Lossie was the flying tin openaers, No. 6 Squadron, who arrived from RAF Leuchars to Lossiemouth with 9 Typhoons on 20 June 2014 in a number 6 formation. 1 Fighter squadron followed on 8 September 2014, when responsibility for Quick Reaction Alert (North) was transferred from RAF Leuchars to Lossiemouth. The third Typhoon unit to arrive was 2 AC squadron in January 2015 along with the Mountain Rescue Team moves from Kinloss to Lossiemouth. 15 (R) Squadron disbanded on 31 March 2017. The fourth and final Typhoon squadron to make Lossie home was the green bats in 2019 IX(B) Squadron was formally re-roled from Tornado at RAF Marham to Typhoon at RAF Lossiemouth. In 2020 Loissiemouths new runway resurfacing scheme began and when it finished in 2021 the first Poseidon MRA1 touched down on UK soil at Kinloss Barracks in February, closely followed by the second in March. October saw ZP801, 802, and 803 arrive at RAF Lossiemouth for the first time, where they have operated from since.
